PLN Energi Gas Successfully Completes Commissioning and Gas-In at the Tarakan LNG Storage and Regasification Facility

Tarakan, 14 September 2025 – PLN Energi Gas (PLN EG) marked a significant milestone in its strategic project by successfully completing the commissioning and gas-in at the Tarakan LNG Storage and Regasification Facility on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. WITA. This “gas-in” marks a significant step in the operational process and is a highly anticipated milestone for the entire PLN Energi Gas team.

The event was witnessed firsthand by the Acting Director of Operations at PLN Energi Gas, Mr. Yusuf Kusdinar, along with relevant management personnel, as a demonstration of the company’s full commitment to supporting energy security in the North Kalimantan region.

Acting President Director, Mr. Edwin Bangun, stated:

“This LNG injection marks an important milestone for PLN Energi Gas and is a tangible manifestation of synergy within the PLN Group. The Tarakan LNG Storage and Regasification Facility will ensure a more reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly energy supply in Tarakan. This success is also attributable to the support of PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) as the shareholder, which ensures the availability of LNG, as well as its role as a subholding company that assigns tasks and places full trust in us. This synergy serves as a strong foundation for PLN Energi Gas to continue supporting the clean energy transition and achieving national energy security, particularly in North Kalimantan.”

This project is designed to enhance the reliability of primary energy supply in supporting electricity provision for the people of Tarakan, specifically by utilizing gas from Kayan LNG, which is transported using 40-foot ISO tanks (21 units) aboard a 1,500 DWT LCT vessel to Malundung Port in Tarakan. Every week, LNG is distributed to Tarakan through this mechanism.

From the port, the LNG is then transferred to the ISO tank laydown area and subsequently transported by LNG trucks with trailers to the ISO tank storage facility in Gunung Belah, Tarakan, located approximately 5.3 km away. From this point, the LNG is piped through an additional pipeline to the Gunung Belah Gas-Fired Power Plant (PLTMG), serving as the primary energy supply.

With this facility now operational, it is expected that the energy supply for Tarakan will be more reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly, while also serving as an important milestone in supporting Indonesia’s clean energy transition.
